About us

The Leadership Foundation provides a dedicated service of support and advice on leadership, governance and management for all the UK’s universities and Higher Education colleges.

Status

We are a company limited by guarantee (company registration number 4929860) registered in England and Wales. We are also a registered charity (charity registration number 1101959). Our registered office and operational address is at First Floor, Holborn Gate, 330 High Holborn, London WC1V 7QT.

We have a Board of Trustees who are responsible for strategy, finance and employment. All Board members were appointed through open competition and are representative of the Higher Education sector.

The Leadership Foundation’s remit

Whereas the Higher Education Academy www.heacademy.ac.uk has been set up to support the quality enhancement in teaching and the student experience, the Leadership Foundation is committed to developing and improving the management and leadership skills of existing and future leaders of Higher Education. Wherever the opportunity arises we shall work together for the benefit of the sector, as in the case of the innovative and successful ‘Change Academy’.

How we operate

The Leadership Foundation does not have a college or fixed training centre. We will meet needs where they arise, through our experienced staff and associates. Our small head office is in Holborn but we will have staff based in others parts of the UK. The total full-time equivalent is around 18.

Funding

We are required to achieve sustainability, so from the outset we will aim to recover most of our costs from a combination of programme fees and membership income. In the first 3/4 years, our major programme of development is supported by £10m from the four UK funding bodies.

Our Key Sponsors

The Leadership Foundation was established by the UUK and GuildHE and we are therefore primarily responsible to each HEI and Higher Education collectively.

Because of their significant funding support, we have a specific accountability to the four higher education funding bodies of the UK. They will be concerned that we deliver across the full leadership agenda and offer value for money.

We maintain regular liaison with BIS and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
