Developing future leaders for higher education
Download the Aurora Brochure
Aurora is our new women-only leadership development initiative to be launched in the autumn.
Aurora aims to enable a wider range of women in academic and professional roles to think of themselves as future leaders, to develop the skills they will need, and to help their institutions to maximise the use of the skills they acquire. This innovative development process will focus on women up to senior lecturer level or professional services equivalent.
This initiative is a response to our own research which shows there are fewer women in the most senior positions in higher education than ten years ago and identifies features that could be addressed to change this. Many influential stakeholders including vice-chancellors, Hefce and the ECU agree the situation calls for action and the feedback from the sector tells us they would like to encourage more women to plan and prepare better for leadership roles at an early point in their careers.
We believe Aurora will be a learning intervention that combines education, mentoring and self-directed learning to provide learning with a more enduring impact. It is an ‘as well as’ for women not ‘instead of’ other LF programmes, where we expect to go on drawing equally from men and women as before.

Like a lot of organisations, we realise we have work to do on our male/female staff ratios at senior levels, so I was very pleased to get details of the Aurora programme. I’m delighted that the University of London is one of the first to sign up and I strongly believe this will help us in very practical ways to address gender equality.
