A complexity approach to leadership development: developing practical judgment
Dr Kevin Flinn and Professor Chris Mowles, University of Hertfordshire
Stimulus Paper, May 2013
Developed over the last fifteen years at the University of Hertfordshire (UH), the perspective of complex responsive processes of relating (Stacey, 2000; Griffin, 2005; Shaw, 2002; Mowles, 2011) proffers a radically different view of leadership and organisation, drawing as it does on the sciences of complexity. The papers explore the practicalities of this perspective for leaders and participants of leadership development by providing accounts of two extended development programmes in which insights from complex responsive processes have been central.
The authors recount the practical experience of designing and running two development programmes, drawing on data gleaned from post intervention questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. They also use the narrative accounts of participants to illustrate how their thinking and practice has changed as a result of working differently. The paper is aimed at management educators, internal and external consultants, developers and researchers of leadership and leadership development
