This paper will focuses on nursing and teacher education as exemplars of new practice disciplines within universities. It will address the leadership challenges which arise when navigating tensions between competing discourses of employer demand and academic drivers for growth, research excellence and value for money. The paper will also draw on learning from employers and leaders of comparable academic portfolios across Europe.

The aim of this paper is to reconceptualise the challenges associated with the leadership, management and governance of teaching in mass higher education. It will explore how teaching is conceptualised in higher education, who leads it strategically, how it works as a managerial operation in different institutional contexts and how academic governance works and who governs.
