Despite some advances, there is still evidence to suggest that inequalities for BME students and staff in higher education persist. This paper uses empirical data to examine the experiences of BME academics using the following themes:
The paper aims to provide data to explore current challenges for BME leaders in universities and suggest some policy recommendations. It finds that greater change is needed in academia for the inclusion of BME academics, particularly in relation to the issues of promotion and progression and that greater support is needed for BME academics in senior and junior positions so as not to hinder their chances of career progression.
