Academic Quality and Student Experience

“The Governing Body of a University is formally responsible for determining the educational character of the institution” Schofield A. (2009) What is an Effective and High Performing Governing Body in UK Higher Education. Leadership Foundation. London. How can the governing body carry out its responsibility while supporting core academic values such as academic freedom?

Many governing bodies have been cautious about being involved in such developments and there are sensitivities about the role that governing bodies are now expected to play on matters which had previously been almost wholly in the province of senates/academic boards.

Leading Cities: place based leadership and the role of universities

Times: 10:00 – 14.00, including light lunch

This is a key launch event which we are holding on to mark a major milestone in our project entitled Leading Cities.

Based on new research, this project aims to make a major contribution to the initiative on the leadership of ‘place’ and put particular emphasis on creating an inclusive approach that much more fully engages the contribution of universities as key partners in civic and community leadership.

The core of the event will be a presentation of the research undertaken by Professor John Goddard, previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University. Other keynote speakers will be Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the RSA, Professor Steve West, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West of England and Dr Su Maddock of the Whitehall Innovation Hub.

It will also provide an opportunity to engage with the development of the second stage, which is the creation of a unique new leadership programme that is ‘City based’ for senior leaders across all key partners involved in city leadership. Dr Tom Kennie, Director of this new programme and Programme Director of the Leadership Foundation’s Top Management Programme will be presenting our plans for this innovative programme and seeking feedback.

TMP Fellows Alumni Meeting 2010: Sustaining Success in Challenging Times

23rd - 24th March 2010

One issue on which we would probably all agree is that the 2010-2011 academic year is going to be a tough one. Consequently the 2010 Fellows meeting is going to focus on providing insights, intelligence and ideas to help us through the challenges ahead. Short term responses to the challenges will be critical, however, it is also important to ensure as leaders we are also building an organisation which will be able to be sustainable in the longer term.

Future Leaders Programme: Cohort 5

The Future Leaders Programme (FLP) has been designed to help experienced professional Information Services (IS) staff (typically covering library, ICT and related activities), to deepen their understanding, leadership ability and potential in preparation for a head of service role. The programme has been developed with the support of SCONUL, UCISA, JISC and the British Library.

Introduction to Higher Education

An Introduction to Higher Education - A Programme for New Managers and Administrators -  provides an excellent introduction for professionals entering the Higher Education Sector. Over three days, you will gain an insight into a wide spectrum of issues influencing HE. Alumni Conference 2010: L>C - leading change in universities through learning

A one-day Alumni Conference for previous participants of our open programmes: SSL, PSSL, HoD and HoD Scotland. The theme of the Conference is L>C - leading change in universities through learning.

With over 600 alumni, our programmes have started to develop communities of practice in leadership. The Conference presents an opportunity to take these communities further, by giving alumni from across a range of programmes the opportunity to meet one another and share perspectives.

Ensuring Financial Health - The Role of Governors

This is the second of three one day seminars for new governors. Governing bodies have an explicit responsibility for ensuring the financial health of their institutions, and this event will consider what this means in practice for governors. There will be opportunity for delegates to explore how this is done in other institutions, and to discuss the resulting issues.
