MASHEIN was established in 2000 and has been funded by the Leadership Foundation since 2005. MASHEIN is a network of 37 small institutions in the UK providing development and training events on a national level, specifically focused on the needs of small higher education institutions. We define 'small' as institutions with fewer than 3000 f.t.e. higher education students, and fewer than 4000 f.t.e. students overall.
The MASHEIN programme supports institutions in the areas of succession planning, change management, and responding to sector developments. It has three strands:
A list of forthcoming MASHEIN events is available and further details may be found under the relevant strand listed above.
A selection of materials arising out of past MASHEIN events is available and can be accessed by all HEIs.
The White Paper on Higher Education: Implications for Small and Specialist Institutions
This lunchtime seminar was held at the British Academy on July 6th – just one week after the publication of the White Paper. Martin Williams, the Director of HE Strategy at Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, addressed 30 MASHEIN delegates. He began with some general background on the White Paper and then drew out some themes for small and specialist HEIs.
Some delegate responses:
‘Openness of discussion greatly appreciated’
‘The most useful aspect was the political insight into why some elements have been included in the White Paper’
‘The group discussion was very interesting and useful’
‘It confirmed my interpretation of the White Paper’
