Leading responsibly in challenging times:
Accountability and evidence-based practice in higher education

These three inter-related seminars will help you to explore ways of guiding complex organisations successfully through challenging times.

There is a flyer available with details of the first two events and there is also a short biography of the seminar leader, Alastair Work

Process Review – ensuring efficiency and effectiveness

Friday 15 January 2010

This seminar will stimulate thinking about how best to approach the challenge of delivering ever more efficient and effective services in higher education contexts.

With intensifying pressure on resources and increasingly demanding expectations of service, what is the scope for improving the way we support our institutions?  The event will feature case studies, process review models, pitfalls and opportunities for practical dialogue to share and support good practice in this area.

The seminar will be of particular interest to service leaders, project managers and business improvement teams across the full range of University services.

Approach

The seminar will feature short and thought-provoking inputs on the main themes of the day, each followed by facilitated group discussions.  Delegates are encouraged to bring with them their experience, their questions and the immediate challenges they face in this area with a view to getting practical support from each other and from the facilitator.

Contracting Support – using consultants wisely

Thursday 18 March 2010

This seminar will open discussion about how and when to use external consultancy to support the work within higher education institutions.  What modes of consultancy are available and when is each appropriate?  What should the contracting process entail?  What are the respective roles of consultant and client group? How do you get best value from consultancy?

The event will feature input from practising consultants, case studies and opportunities to share experiences and good practice in this area.

It will be of particular interest to service leaders, project managers and business improvement teams across the full range of University services.

Seminar leader

Alastair Work, Leadership Foundation Key Associate

Alastair Work is a freelance Organisational Development specialist, working principally (but not exclusively) with the UK higher education sector.  Since starting his own consultancy he has worked with staff from more than 80 UK HEI’s, on leadership, change, creativity and other facets of organisational experience. He is well-known across higher education in Scotland and his interventions have been variously described as engaging, humorous and lively.

For the first 20 years of his career, Alastair worked within organisations in the private sector and in higher education, successively as a teacher, personnel officer, academic registrar, and university Secretary.  In 2001, he became the first person in the 600 year history of the University of St Andrews to be appointed as a vice-principal from a ‘non-academic’ background.

Alastair is a key associate of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and a fellow of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD).
