About this site

This site is an initiative of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and the Committee of University Chairs (CUC), and has been funded through the support of the UK higher education funding councils coordinated by HEFCE. It is designed to support governors and others involved in the governance of higher education institutions.

Terminology

Throughout the site the following words and abbreviations are used:

Governance terminology
"Colleges" Refers to higher education colleges in England unless otherwise stated.
"Governor" Refers to members of the board of governors/council/governing body.
"HEI" Is used as an abbreviation for all higher education institutions in the UK.
"Pre-1992 Universities" Refers to the governance of those universities in existence before 1992.
"Post-1992 Institutions" Refers to the governance of those institutions which became universities after 1992, and which typically have slightly different legal governance arrangements.
