GDP Conference - Higher Education in a New Political Climate 2010

We have been invited to feedback the key messages coming out of our recent conference on ‘Higher Education in a New Political Climate’ to the Right Honourable David Willetts MP

The four key message are:

1. A reminder to Government of the enormous economic and social impact or universities to the UK and their vital contribution to learning and knowledge creation across the private, public and third sectors.

2. The members of our university boards and councils generally serve in a wholly voluntary capacity, which is now much less common in the public sector, and their contribution to leadership of these large and complex institutions merits appropriate recognition in enormously difficult times for funding and support.

3. The ability to maintain the growth in numbers of international students is particularly important in times of threats to sector funding and sustainability. This dimension is critical both to the financial health of universities and the richness of campus life, and must be borne in mind in relation to any changes in Coalition policy on immigration.

4. As the proposed formula for funding from the Browne Review is being considered, many pointed out the detailed issue that the cash flow of funding must continue to be evenly spread to ensure an even flow of cash across the year.
