An Evaluation of the Effectiveness and Role of HEFCE/OSI Third Stream Funding by PACEC and the Centre for Business Research, University of Cambridge presents an assessment of the extent to which third stream funding by HEFCE and Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills has secured direct and indirect economic benefits, by embedding a culture and capacity within higher education institutions that supports the transfer and exchange of knowledge between institutions, business and the wider community. The report finds there has been considerable progress over the first 10 years of funding specifically for third stream activity.
HEFCE has published its policy and allocations for HEIF funding for 2011-12 to 2014-15.
The Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE) has published Universities, Business and Knowledge Exchange, which reports the findings of a study based on 30 universities and businesses.
Entrepreneurialism in Universities and the Knowledge Economy: Diversification and Organisational Change in European Higher Education by Michael Shattock (SRHE/OU Press), uses 27 case studies to demonstrate the level of entrepreneurialism in European universities.
Governors may wish to consult the Higher Education - Business and the Community Interaction Survey for 2009-10. This is also available in a summary report and there is also further material on the value and effectiveness of knowledge exchange on the HEFCE web site.
The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has published a strategy guide Intellectual Asset Management for Universities which includes advice on the development and management of intellectual assets.
