- The importance of strategic planning has led HEFCE to produce a good practice guide for institutions (Report 00/24) on strategic planning. In particular see Appendix E on the role of the governing body in strategic planning.
- There are numerous textbooks and articles on strategic planning. Perhaps the two most useful to governors are: 'Strategic Planning in Australian Universities' published in 1999 by the Australian Department of Education, Skills and Training and Professor Sir David Watson, Managing Strategy - a Guide to Good Practice, Open University/Society for Research in Higher Education, 2000.
- The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges in the USA produces a number of useful publications on strategic planning.
- For governors in
Wales the HEFCW has produced a Toolkit for Governors comprising reports and graphical analyses of higher education activity for Welsh institutions.
- E. Hazelkorn has provided an interesting review of league tables, performance indicators and rankings in Learning to live with league tables and ranking: the experience of institutional leaders in Higher Education Policy, 21(2).
- A Guide to Scenario Planning in Higher Education provides an introduction to scenario planning in higher education.
