The Governing Body and Student Matters
Governing bodies are generally responsible for a number of student-related issues:
- Ensuring that all aspects of the student experience are consistent with the institution's mission and strategic direction. This is assuming a higher profile with the major fee increases due in 2012-13.
- Ensuring that services and processes are in place to provide student support.
- Carrying out their statutory responsibilities in relation to students which cannot be delegated. These will vary between institutions. Specific advice should be obtained from the clerk to the board of governors.
- Ensuring that student unions operate within regulatory requirements.
- Ensuring that student appeals, complaints and disciplinary procedures are conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements.
The involvement of the governing body in student matters varies from institution to institution. Generally, most student-related matters will be dealt with in academic departments, or as part of the academic governance process involving the senate or academic board. It is important for the governing body, which is unambiguously responsible for student matters, to be assured that effective processes are in place to deal with them.
The CUC and NUS have published a supplementary guide (to the CUC Guide) covering the role of the governing body in relation to its Student's Union.
