Governor Development Programme

The 2010-11 Governor Development Programme Seminars and Events brochure is now available.

The Leadership Foundation for Higher Education is pleased to provide you with our programme of events for governors for 2010-11. Our key aim is to address the current needs of governors, and to provide an opportunity both to learn from our key contributors and also to network with other governors.

The number of events we are now providing has increased substantially over the last two years. In 2008 we offered 11 events and, as you will see from this brochure we now offer 20 events. The feedback we are receiving from chairs, clerks and secretaries of governing boards and, indeed, governors who have participated in this year’s events, is that, in addition to the days for new governors, topics such as Governing in a Downturn, and Current Issues for Remuneration Committees are exactly the type of topical issues which governors are interested in and want to know more about.

In addition to many of the events which will be familiar to you, this year we have also included some new ones and some which have been updated from previous years. These include:

Where significant changes are being made to a governance related issue, we have also included new topics which we hope that governors will find useful, such as:

In order to provide this selection of events and seminars, we are working in partnership with a number of key organisations. These include:

This partnership arrangement ensures that, in attending these events, you get the opportunity to hear a variety of current perspectives. In addition, you may well come across this programme at events or in communications from some of these organisations, as well as in the normal communications from the Leadership Foundation.

The Governor Development Programme is designed to address the needs of all of our governors across the UK. It is important to note that while days may be flagged as more relevant to particular governors, any governor is welcome to attend any event. In addition to the events covered in this programme we will also be adding additional events/conferences as the year develops to address the evolving situation.

Many governors have commented over the last year on how valuable the governors’ website is to them and have appreciated the JISC mail system we have now as this offers a direct way of sharing good practice and keeping everyone up to date on the research and development which we are undertaking in this area. All our governance publications are available on the website, and during the year we plan three new ‘Getting to Grips’ guides covering the topics of: academic quality and the student experience; internationalisation; and understanding research, which we will publish on the website in due course. In addition the results of the pilot benchmarking project to review governing body effectiveness will also deliver its findings and recommendations during spring 2011.

The Governor Development Programme was started in 2005 and built on the earlier initiatives of the Committee of University Chairs (CUC). The programme is designed to support governors in all higher education institutions throughout the UK (members of boards of governors, councils and courts in Scotland). A cross sector group is advising and supporting the development of the programme. The development plan for the period 2008 – 2012 (Word 273 KB) sets out the work to be undertaken in the next few years.
