Funding Higher Education

The independent review of higher education funding and student finance, chaired by Lord Browne of Madingley was set up in late 2009. It has now published its report, Securing a Sustainable Future for Higher Education in England, which is likely to have a significant impact on funding in England.

Chapter 2 of Getting to Grips with Research and Knowledge Transfer gives a national overview of research funding in higher education and Chapter 8 of Getting to Grips with Academic Standards, Quality and the Student Experience covers the funding and costs of teaching.

The HEFCE publication the Financial Health of the Higher Education Sector shows that the sector's finances at the end of 2010-11 were broadly healthy and had improved from the previous year. HEFCW has published a similar financial analysis for Wales.

Following a consultation, HEFCW has published initial proposals for changing the funding system for higher education in Wales.

The Welsh Assembly Government has begun a review of the cost of administering the education system in Wales, with preliminary findings indicating that savings could be made by simplifying procedures and increasing the amount of shared provision.
