BIS Savings Advice to Universities

The Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Vince Cable, and the Minister of State for Universities and Science, David Willetts, have written to Vice-Chancellors and Principals setting out how the Department intends to respond to the Government's need for substantial savings. Whilst respecting the autonomy of individual institutions, they have indicated an expectation that there should be restraint in all aspects of pay and bonuses, with a lead being given by senior staff; a freeze on recruitment; and reductions in discretionary spending such as IT projects, consultancy, hospitality, marketing, travel and subsistence.
