Governance under the spotlight

Recent weeks have seen media reports (see in particular the Independent on 13 August 2009) and debate about a number of universities (including the University of East London, City University, Leeds Metropolitan University and Royal Holloway, University of London) where vice-chancellors have left their posts earlier than expected, apparently following disputes or breakdowns in their relationships with their governing bodies. These cases have brought to the fore the importance of a strong and trusting relationship between governing bodies and vice-chancellors.

The web site provides advice for governors on the appointment and remuneration of senior staff and what can go wrong.

For regular updates on various topics governors may wish to join the HEFCE Governance e mail list.
