Using the governance website

This site is intended to support governors and others involved in the governance of institutions of higher education. It may be particularly helpful for those new to higher education, especially new members of governing bodies (councils or boards of governors in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and courts in Scotland).

The site contains information and guidance on governance processes. This is mainly in the sections About Governance, Governing Bodies and Decision Making and Governing Body Membership.

There are also a sections specifically for staff and student governors and for Clerks / Secretaries to governing bodies and their staff.

Those who are considering becoming a governor in higher education will find some useful information in the section for Prospective Governors.

There is also some brief summary information about higher education, which will be of interest to those new to the sector, in particular in the section on Higher Education Fast Facts, Legal, Students and Key Governance Functions.

Some of the most commonly asked questions are covered by FAQs.

There are also sections on major governance topics, which will be of interest to all governors – Reviewing Governance and Strategy and Measuring Performance in particular.

For most sections there are links to other web sites and sources of further information, some on other parts of this site and others elsewhere. If a link has taken you off this site you can return to it by clicking the "Back" button

Some of the major publications can be downloaded as pdf files, either in total or as individual chapters/ sections.
