The 2007 conference brought together those interested in staff and organisational development in higher education.
Brighton Eclectica, the over-arching theme, acknowledged the range, variety and changing nature of development (and development professionals and their ‘audiences’) in UK higher education, as well as its location in Brighton, the ‘alternative capital’ of England.
A major focus for the conference was development connections, with the following broad development themes:
With both formal and informal space available, there was plenty of opportunities for delegates to engage in a wide range of activities. Plenary sessions were set out cabaret style to encourage interaction between delegates; formal and informal networking sessions and contributions from regional groups feature and the programme included some innovative, multimedia approaches to development.
Conference speakers included Kimberley Hare, well known for her perspectives on 'brain-friendly learning' and an interactive session led by Graham Shaw, cartoonist, demonstrating the potential of cartooning in development and coaching and mentoring specialist Professor David Megginson.
