New Director of Governor Development Programme Announced

The Leadership Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Dawn Forman as the new director of the Governor Development Programme (GDP). She started the role this month (June 09) which involves setting up and leading a series of learning and networking events for governors from all the UK’s universities and higher education colleges.

Chief executive of the Leadership Foundation, Ewart Wooldridge said, “We are really looking forward to the working with Professor Forman to further enhance our work in this key area of Leadership, Governance and Management.”

Sir Andrew Burns, chair of the Committee of University Chairs (CUC) said “The Leadership Foundation is a key partner in the promotion of better governance in the higher education sector and we warmly welcome the experience and enthusiasm which Professor Forman is bringing to the GDP.”

Professor Forman became fascinated by the work of the Leadership Foundation when she was a delegate on Top Management Programme 10 in 2006. On becoming an independent consultant, she was pleased to be asked to contribute to the Top Management Programme.  The post of director of the Governor Development Programme provides Dawn with the opportunity to continue to develop her involvement with the Leadership Foundation and complements other aspects of her consultancy.

Prior to becoming an independent consultant, Professor Forman was an executive dean of faculty for 12 years at two universities in the UK and was the academic board representative on the University Council for four years.

Professor Forman’s health service background led to her being appointed as a non-executive director for the Trent Strategic Health Authority where she participated in the audit and remuneration committee and had a remit of chairing the performance management reviews of four NHS trusts in the region.

Professor Forman’s consultancy and executive coaching now includes work with HEIs, through Ranmore Consulting, and with the NHS.  She maintains her professorial status as a visiting professor at the University of Chichester and adjunct professor at the Auckland University of Technology New Zealand.

Professor Forman would like to build on the success of the GDP and on recent Leadership Foundation governance publications.  She would particularly like to increase the diversity of governors who participate in the delivery of the programme and to ensure the Leadership Foundation’s provision for governors fully supports the sharing of good practice across the sector.
