We are pleased to be releasing our new Stimulus Papers’ which are devised to inform thinking, choices and decisions at institutional and system levels in higher education. Selected through an open tender series they are thought-provoking, as they aim to address the challenges facing leaders, managers and governors in the new economic environment facing the UK. We have grouped the Stimulus Papers into clusters covering such themes as higher education leadership; business models for higher education; external collaborations; leading the student experience and leadership and equality of opportunity in higher education.
Available for the first time today are the following Stimulus Papers:
The first publication in the cluster of leading the student experience is by Dr Kathleen M. Quinlan of Oxford Learning Institute, University of Oxford, entitled Developing the whole student: leading higher education initiatives that integrate mind and heart. In it Dr Quinlan argues that higher education needs to focus on the holistic development of the student, beyond influencing students’ knowledge base, thinking abilities and skills. Dr Quinlan’s paper asks that we take a much broader view of the educational process.
Under the theme of external collaborations, we have published Collaborations and mergers in higher education: learned and future prospects, by Glynne Stanfield, who is a partner at the international law firm Eversheds. In this paper he considers what might happen in the context of collaborations and mergers in higher education over the next few years.
The cluster of leading equality and diversity’s first paper, is by Professor Martin Hall, the vice-chancellor of the University of Salford. In Inequality and higher education: marketplace or social justice?, Professor Hall compares and contrasts poverty in Britain with that in South Africa, and argues that the transformative nature of higher education will be lost in the UK's march towards marketisation. This Stimulus Paper includes responses from 3 former vice-chancellors, a current vice-chancellor and a professor of research and higher education.
