We have pioneered three new programmes for heads of departments, (both academic and administrative) two UK-wide and also, in response to the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council’s (now Scottish Funding Council) needs analysis, one specifically for Scotland.
Both programmes assist individual leaders to develop their self awareness, to understand better the impact of their behaviour on the teams for whom they have responsibility.
Understanding strategy, strategic leadership, and team development and performance management are key components of these programme.

What is the difference between Head of Department (HoD) and Heartlands?
The programmes are both for academic and professional staff and seem very alike so which is most appropriate? For someone that is a newly appointed head of department or maybe ready to fast track into that position then HoD is the right programme for them: two modules of three days over a two month period will give the participants the leadership skills in a very short time. For someone where its recognised that they have the potential to become head of department in the future or for those who have time or budget constraints then Heartlands maybe the answer, where the option to spread the modules over a 12 month period makes it more flexible.
