Background

The Leadership Foundation in collaborative partnership with members of the UCISA (Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association) Staff Development Group and SCONUL (Society of College National and University Libraries), offers this course for those colleagues in computing, library and information service departments who are new to a management or supervisory role.

Having recognised that there is a need for the adoption of good practice in management at all levels we have reviewed the needs of managers from across the sector, both first-line managers and those at more senior levels. This course seeks, through the shared involvement of professionals from computing, library and information service backgrounds, to provide an insight into managing oneself and other colleagues. Additionally it offers opportunities to discuss management/supervisory work issues with colleagues from other HEIs.

Aims

To provide recently appointed first-line managers and supervisors with an introduction to the role of manager and some specific management skills.

Objectives

By the end of this programme participants will have:

• examined their role as a manager within the context of their specific job and tasks;

• examined their own preferred management and leadership styles;

• considered and practised a range of personal management skills;

• looked at ways in which people work together effectively in teams and practised team-building skills, including decision-making in meetings;

• considered a range of people management problems within the context of formal personnel policies and procedures;

• had an opportunity to assess their role in the rapidly changing world of higher education and information services.

Content

The focus throughout will be on practical management skills and their application in the workplace. There will be ample opportunity for staff to discuss and share experiences with colleagues. The main themes will be:
