Bespoke (In-Country) Programmes

We work closely with our partners and clients, designing bespoke programmes and projects to meet their needs. Programmes and projects take place in the UK and/or overseas; they can be based on one of the Leadership Foundation’s existing UK programmes and adapted to meet the organisational and cultural needs of the client, or we are happy to design completely new programmes.

An example of a bespoke leadership development and management programme delivered in India and the UK: University Leadership Development/Indian Leadership and Management Programme for Institutes and Universities

Background: The Leadership Foundation are working in partnership with UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) department of the British Council in India to develop a sustainable leadership development strategy to work with the Higher Education sector nationally.

Programme: Universities throughout India were invited to apply for a place on the first pilot cohort of the programme, which was aimed at those within Higher Education with an aspiration for leadership. The programme contained elements of Train the Trainer, and a Project task linked to their individual institutions.

Impact: The initial pilot stage allowed UKERI to identify key areas for future focus and design change, which will lead to the establishment and growth of a community of skilled leaders and managers within the HE sector. The next cohort of the programme will further encompass key areas of the Indian culture, while aiding the entrenchment of established leadership skills into the Indian HE sector.

An example of a programme to assist reform in the sector of Higher Education in Ukraine: Ukraine Higher Education Leadership Development Programme 

Background: The Leadership Foundation are working in partnership with the British Council in Ukraine and the Institute of Higher Education of the National Academy of the Educational Sciences of Ukraine to deliver a Leadership Development programme for forty universities to be delivered over 3 years (2015 - 2018).

Programme: Universities throughout the Ukraine were invited to apply for a place on the first year of the programme which is aimed at teams made up of senior and middle managers, academics and students. The second year of the programme is currently under discussion. 

Impact: The programme has been designed to enable the implementation of innovative change for universities and includes Train the Trainer, Development Centre, Future Leaders and Change Academy modules. Each team has identified an institutional change project and will work with an institution based in the UK funded by the British Council mobility grants for the UK-Ukrainian exchanges for exploration of best practice and expertise.

An example of a bespoke leadership development and capacity-building programme delivered in the UK: University of Bradford and Pakistan Higher Education Commission

Background: Pakistan has a mission to improve its higher education system, and its Higher Education Commission embarked on a programme of visits to understand and evaluate their higher education provision.

Programme: Working with ministries, vice-chancellors and senior university academics the Leadership Foundation commissioned reports on leadership in Pakistan and designed tailor-made programmes. The University of Bradford hosted the programme, which was attended by a group of vice-chancellors from different regions of Pakistan.

Outcomes: The university and the local authority welcomed delegates, and a series of specific meetings about collaborations in different disciplines led to a flow of inward students. In Islamabad the University of Bradford and its vice-chancellor are seen as a top international partner.

University of Bradford vice-chancellor, Professor Mark Cleary said,

One should not underestimate the value of opportunities of this kind. The personal contacts build awareness, trust and confidence which go on to make effective internationalisation a reality.

An example of an existing UK leadership development programme delivered overseas: Senior Strategic Leadership, Australia

Leadership Foundation associate John Ramsden delivered an adaptation of the Leadership Foundation’s UK programme Senior Strategic Leadership in Melbourne, Australia to a group of participants from Australia and New Zealand. The programme was tailored to meet the requirements of the participant group and was developed in collaboration with the LH Martin Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Management. The programme focused on the challenge of establishing strategic direction in the current dynamic tertiary education environment and engaging others in the future direction of their organisation. Delivery methods included development groups, leadership through drama, experienced guest speakers, case studies and master classes.

The Leadership Foundation offers a wide range of Leadership Development Consultancy to support international and UK higher educations institutions (HEIs) in achieving strategic international objectives.
