The Leadership Foundation have recently released two Stimulus Papers around the themes of big data and disabled leaders. These papers arrive at a time higher education institutions are being challenged and encouraged to be both more commercially driven and inclusive. These publications are online only.
Big data – disruptive, distracting or adding value?
“Globalisation is eroding borders, turning universities into cosmopolitan hubs in the midst of a struggle between openness and nativism. Data and algorithms are regearing the economy towards a model that prioritises results over procedures. From retail to healthcare, every industry is adapting to this shift.”
Alex Katsomitros, journalist, The European
Alex Katsomitros provides useful insights into how other countries and sectors are using data innovatively, as well as offering case studies and recommendations that will help institutions to ride the wave of the data-driven revolution, rather than be swept away by it. A key finding from the report encourages leaders across various departments to enhance their understanding of data and integrate data into their strategy.

Encouraging disabled leaders in higher education: recognising hidden talents
“Strategic level commitment is necessary to eradicate barriers and sustain change. Well organised, supportive environments are necessary for disabled people to contribute effectively and realise their career aspirations.”
Professor Nicola Martin, head of research, London South Bank University
Professor Nicola Martin explores the experiences of disabled leaders in higher education. Around 90 disabled people, mainly from UK universities, contributed to the study which looks at the various barriers to encouraging and developing disabled leaders in higher education. One of the key recommendations was the need for visible championing of the issues as well as equality mainstreaming in strategic and day-to-day planning.
