Leading change in Wales has never been more topical, and at this one-day event you will hear from the Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Education, Kirsty Williams AM, on her vision for the sector and from other experienced leaders in change, from both inside and outside of the sector. As well as talks, there will be plenty of opportunity to explore examples of best practice on navigating through the challenges of leading change, as well as an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues from the sector.

Kirsty Williams AM
Cabinet Secretary for Education, Welsh Government

Kirsty grew up in the village of Bynea, Carmarthenshire. Graduating from University of Manchester with an honours degree in American studies, Kirsty worked for the learning resources department of Carmarthenshire College in Llanelli before taking up a post as a marketing and public relations executive for a small business in Cardiff.

A member of the Liberal Democrats since the age of 15, Kirsty was elected as an Assembly Member for the constituency of Brecon and Radnorshire in May 1999 and became leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats on 08 December 2008 until May 2016. In May 2016 Kirsty was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Education.


Fiona Roberts
Director, Cox Roberts Consulting (former Human Resources Director, Volkswagen UK)

Fiona began her career in Retail Operations with Sock shop, Superdrug and Boots as well as MacDonald’s. She subsequently completed an MA in HR Management and transitioned into HR where she has since held HR Director roles with BAA incorporating Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports before and post demerger, thereafter becoming HR Director for Carillion and in May 2010, Human Resources Director at Volkswagen UK.

In 2014 Fiona was named HR Director of the Year at the Personnel Today Awards, the same year that Volkswagen Group UK was awarded Top Employer status by the Top Employers Institute for its commitment to developing talent and offering a first-class working environment  across its five brands. Fiona’s leadership has led to the business being accredited as a Top Employer and achieving “Great Place to Work” status since 2012. Fiona is now a Director of her own consultancy.


Dr Fiona Beddoes-Jones
Chief Executive, The Cognitive Fitness Consultancy

Dr Fiona Beddoes-Jones is a Chartered Psychologist and the author of the psychometric instruments Thinking Styles™ and Cognitive Team Roles™. Working closely with senior officers in the RAF, she conducted her doctoral research into Authentic Leadership, and developed the UK’s only 360° Authentic Leadership development tool.  

In her spare time Fiona is Race Psychologist for both the Spine Race, an ultra-endurance 7-day marathon up the full length of the Pennine Way every January, and also the Ice-Warrior Project, a citizen-science project to the last undiscovered North Pole; the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, to measure the rapidly melting Arctic sea ice.


Vijaya Nath

Director for Leadership Development, Leadership Foundation for Higher Education

Vijaya Nath is the Director of Leadership Development at Leadership Foundation and leads a team who work on Leadership Development and related interventions and projects. The team’s aim is to enable leaders, managers and governors in higher education to manage and lead organisational and personal change and to enable the system’s capacity for identifying, nurturing and developing future leaders at a strategic level.

 

She brings over 26 years of experience in developing leaders in the private and not-for-profit sector. For the past 18 years she has worked with leaders in health and care, in the four countries of the United Kingdom and internationally. She has significant experience in the design and development of innovative leadership programmes and senior organisational development consultancy.

 

As Director of Leadership Development at The King's Fund, London, Vijaya established a portfolio of interventions including networks, open programmes and thought leadership in medical leadership. She has led a number of international study tours that feature learning from health and non-health organisations that are leading-edge in quality innovation and leadership. 

 

Vijaya has published and written a number of papers on Leadership Development and has influenced thought leadership in the areas of Medical Engagement, Quality Improvement in Health, Equality & Diversity, and the importance of advancing Women in Leadership. She is a visiting professor at Milan's SDA Bocconi School of Management and is a facilitator and chair for Windsor Leadership.


Gary Reed
Assistant Director, Membership (Wales), Leadership Foundation for Higher Education

Gary’s role involves liaising with all higher education institutions in Wales, developing relationships with LF members, and coordinating and developing events and leadership development initiatives that support and complement individual institutions’ strategies and needs and the national Welsh higher education agenda. The role also involves undertaking consultancy and facilitating leadership training.

 

Gary is seconded part-time to the Leadership Foundation and retains his role as director of Research, Business & Innovation at Aberystwyth University, where he and his team support research and enterprise activities across all disciplines. Gary is also responsible for researcher development and is a Welsh Crucible champion and programme facilitator. Gary also headed the Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities’ Strategic Alliance Office, which included project managing three multimillion pound projects. Previously, as a management academic at Loughborough University for 10 years, Gary lectured in leadership, strategy, management and marketing on a number of professional programmes for blue chip clients, and he was director of research for the centre of automotive management. His previous experience includes: qualified secondary school teacher, FE College lecturer, and telecommunications systems sales.
