How do you manage your relationships with the vice chairs, chairs of the governing board and the vice-chancellor? How can you develop your own leadership skills and apply the theories of leadership to shape how you practise your role as clerk or secretary? What are your options for career progression both within and outside the higher education sector?
If these are questions that you have asked yourself, then this 5-day programme dedicated to Clerks and Secretaries could be the right next step in your personal development.
This practical programme, developed in response to feedback from one day programme for clerks and secretaries, consists of 3 one day events and 2 half day events. The programme includes blended learning and action learning sets. It offers the opportunity to discuss and explore challenges over an academic year, apply the knowledge and insights gained on the programme to your daily practice in working with your board, and the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences as part of a professional network long after the programme has ended.
For me, there has been a lot of physical impact of the Programme, and also on my personal development.
What will I learn?
What are the entry requirements? This programme is open to all clerks and secretaries (regardless of whether you are relatively new in post or established in the role) who wish to develop their leadership skills and take advantage of the network opportunity that the programme offers.
It was a chance to get to know others in the sector outside of my area. I have a better sense of the importance of my work and where it fits. I’m now thinking about the future and where to go next.
Who should attend?
This programme is also relevant to those working in governance positions and who help to support the governing body and other senior committees (including academic board/senate) of their institution.
I’ve been on a journey. The level of ambiguity, and my workload, has been high. I’ve had conversations with the secretary and VC about how to develop my role, and I’m steadily developing my responsibilities within my role, the organisation, and the business. I’m becoming more visible, taking more responsibility, and receiving recognition for my work.
