Powerbrokers: Lifting the lid on the Westminster village

Powerbrokers: lifting the lid on the Westminster village will give you the practical skills to impact policy, build relationships with key influencers and help develop the future higher education landscape to position your institution as a national and global leader.

'A programme that enhances one's insights into and understanding of politics in the UK and offers first-hand and highly stimulating learning opportunities for the effective engagement with central government and local politicians.' (Past Participant, Powerbrokers)

Dates: Tuesday 27 - Wednesday 28 March 2018
Location: Whitehall, London

Who is it for? Powerbrokers: lifting the lid on the Westminster Village is for senior higher education leaders who are part of their institutions senior management team.

What will you do?

  • Day one, Understanding, influencing and navigating the political world
After arriving in Whitehall on the morning of Wednesday 13 December 2017 you will be given unique access to MPs, former civil servants and ministers to understand how you can influence policy and politicians to help you to boost your institutions profile and priorities. You will also discover how to give evidence and answer questions at select committees.
  • Day two, The Westminster experience
Following a fast-paced first day, day two will centre on an immersive simulation, where you will take on the role as a minister. Your personal resilience will be tested and your leadership skills challenged in a real-life and real-time scenario, with a cast-list of former senior civil servants, current MPs and former Ministers. Prepare for questions from the house, an interview with a journalist (who has delivered live national broadcast interviews) and the dispatch box. You will have a unique understanding of how MPs make decisions and how you can work with them to influence these decisions to the benefit of your institution.
