Amongst those who have been one, head of department is acknowledged as one of the most challenging roles in the institution, but also one of the most satisfying. It is often the first real leadership role an academic undertakes. The Leading Departments programme, new last year, has been designed as a highly-interactive immersion into the role via an alarmingly realistic simulation supported by actors and facilitators. It is not for the faint-hearted! Intended for those three to six months in post it aims to deliver three years of experience of being a head of department over four days (two two-day modules about two months apart).
