Stimulus Paper, May 2014
Whilst higher education systems differ significantly around the world, many issues are common, and views and solutions found in one place may be of value in another, even if they can seldom simply be transferred. This paper explores some of the key issues and the ways in which academic talent is being led. Influences at the national level on the context for academic leadership are identified, drawing on work in the UK, US, the European Union (EU) as a whole, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Australia and South Africa. A number of institution-level academic leadership issues are dealt with and illustrated using examples from universities worldwide.
We are a membership organisation of and for a sector that has some of the brightest minds in the UK.
Our members are key to our strategy and form a community of higher education institutions with a clear commitment to and experience of developing leadership, governance and management capabilities at all levels. Academic and professional services staff from member institutions contribute to our programmes, projects and research and advise on benefits and services.
