PULSAR Programme Director, Higher Education Consultant, UK
Research-PULSAR Series, March 2014
The Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA)1 and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education in the UK2 jointly mounted a multi-phase Programme for University Leaders in the Southern African Region (PULSAR) between July and November 2012. This document provides an overview of the Programme and some of its key outputs. Separate publications contain four extended essays arising out of the Programme. The Programme provided an opportunity to accelerate the development of senior executive managers in SARUA member organisations in the governance, leadership and management of the universities in which they work. PULSAR was the first programme of its kind in the Southern African region, provided rich learning experiences, new working tools and new professional networks for the Programme participants. Those experiences, tools and networks are of immediate and longer term benefit to participants. It is hoped that the essays based on activities (described below) and the other evidence generated during the Programme will enable those experiences and tools to be disseminated to a wider audience within the region and beyond.
