In this paper the author focuses on the ambiguous role of the Professor and explores the professorial purpose. Professor Evans draws our attention to the lack of boundaries in a role that has changed significantly in recent years. The paper highlights the inconsistent process in which universities publish guidelines about how someone might become a professor, yet pay comparatively little attention to what professors are expected to do. It asks whether we need to find ways of describing expertise in more nuanced ways so that the teaching track has equal status to the research pathway. The role of Professors are a key element to learning and teaching; they are also critical friend to senior leaders involved in leading change in universities.
We believe this paper has arrived at a crucial time as we are presently in a post EU referendum/pre Trump era, where experts are being criticised by the public and politicians. The future will confront institutions with the TEF and Higher Education Bill so it is essential for higher education leaders to find workforce solutions that are inclusive and resilient.
This will be of interest to anyone who is highly influential in shaping institutional professorial promotions and employment policy and practice. This will also be of interest to the wider academic communities who, we believe, should have a voice on such issues.
